Daily Keemo. 02.25. A Postcard From 5:00 AM

A Postcard From 5:00 AM

My eyes opened and it was too dark to see the ceiling and I knew the alarm clock was coming soon but I silently slid out of the bed and down the stairs and felt my way through the dark to the tall desk in the corner and covererd my eyes as I turned the lamp on and I took a seat in the tall chair and the house was cold and silent and I stared at the wall and the stack of papers and thought about all the things on the other side of the alarm that I was dreading and one day these paints will take care of that and there will be no alarm and I found an old postcard from someone and smeared white paint around it and found the .03 pen and moved it around and daydreamed about a day without the alarm and this went on for a while and the postcard was complete and I turned the lamp off and silently went back upstairs and slid into bed and looking at the clock I had just enough time to close my eyes and finish dreaming...Enjoy!

Well, it was time for a change. I am one of those people who genuinely believes that change is good. That isn't to say there isn't value in tradition or patterns but embracing change will lead to much more than the comfort that you get from the predictability of doing the same things over and over and over. From experience, I can guess exactly what a brush will do when I cover it in orange and move it across the paper. You do something enough and you just know. This is what lead me to the new linocuts series. I just needed something new. Carving the linolium blocks for these prints was something I had not done in years (15 maybe?) and it was nice to not really know what the outcome was going to be and it was just fine to be satisfied with whatever the outcome was because during the process it IS ALWAYS about the process and never about the product and the value in that process is never translated into the value of the finished piece and like usual I guess I am starting to write about more than just painting and the creative process but also about our days and nights and the time we have to move around this place and we all have the choice to stick with what we know or try a new path. Here is to trying the new path... Enjoy!

This painting has been staring at me right in the face and I didn't even see it. (Lots of things are right in front our faces all the time and we don't see them, I suppose.) Anyway, I spend alot of time painting on stuff that I find or that is on its way the recycle bin or just has special meaning or any number of other reasons and it just made sense that my own postcards would eventually be given the same treatment. So, with that, here is the first of the series... Enjoy!

Daily Keemo 11.25 - Germany

From Germany. With Love.

Click

Recently, I have been working on some "mail art" projects with artists from other countries. These recent mail projects made me remember the "old days" when you actually took time to sit down and write letters and put effort and thought and creativity into postcards and letters. Now it is all just email and texting and IMing and that jazz and while I am huge proponent of all those things, I still like to see real words on real paper written by a real hand. So, with all that in mind, I decided I'm going to try something a little different with this series. This is a postcard. A real hand made postcard that will be sent just like a real postcard with a real message. This one will not come wrapped up with nicely in an envelope but will travel like nature had intended it. Postage stamp, weather and all! So, with that... Enjoy!

Daily Keemo 11.18 - Loss

Too Sterile For Moments Like These

Click

I was 25 when he died. He died laying there in bed while all of us sat around looking at him. The sound fell out of the air and the air fell out of the room. It seems silly but I knew it was now time to buy my first suit. I remember the light in the room was very white and bright and cold and I thought to myself that it was too sterile in there for a moment like this. I suppose when you have moments like this there are no right ways for them to happen. They happen. And that is how it works. My mother sat on the bed next to him. All five of us kids were scattered around the room. I remember my sister had her arm around me. We sat quietly and all looked at him for a long time. I learned a lot about him in those quiet moments right then.

Daily Keemo 10.02 - Paris

Portrait On A Paris Postcard #16

Click

This is the 16th and final piece in the "Paris Postcard" series. I was looking over my bookshelf and there was a bunch of papers shoved between a couple books. Among other things there were a bunch of postcards that were of different photos taken in Paris during the 1920's. This one in particular is called "The Louvre". All the postcards are very Paris and they make me want to travel and get out of the US for a while and see the other parts of the world where things are new and even simple things are filled with wonder. With that, here is the last and number 16 of the series... Enjoy!

Daily Keemo 08.16 - Trust Me

There Are Not Many Times When Starting From The Beginning Sounds Like The First Course Of Action

Click

I was sitting on the runway waiting for the plane to take off. I hadn't put my headphones on yet. I was tired and it was early and I was ready to get home. I turned the air up a bit and pointed it at my face. I looked out the window at the people loading our bags. I thought for a second that I was glad that I didnt do that for a living. I was ready to get home. I looked around at people getting situated, fussing over coats and bags and books and newspapers and voices blended together with the air blowing on my face and the plane rocked a bit as people moved about and I slipped into daydream staring out at everyone in the plane. I was tired and ready to be home. I closed my eyes and listened and daydreamed and was half asleep and for some reason I tuned into the conversation that was going on in the seats behind me. It was the tone of her voice when she said, "Well, that means we will have to start from the beginning." that got my attention. Her tone made me sad and there are not many times when I think that having to start from the beginning sounds like the first course of action. It is usually the last. There was a long pause and another voice replied, "I know that it will. We will be OK. You can trust me." There was a long silence and I slipped back into daydream again and the air blew in my face and I was tired and was ready to be home...Enjoy!

Daily Keemo 06.11 - Facts

On a per ounce basis, a woman's swimsuit is the highest price of wearing apparel in the United States

or (Other Facts That Don't Seem Like Facts)

Click

It has been a while since I posted something from the "Book of Facts" series. This is the 11th in the "Book of Facts" series. (I was going through a bunch of books that were stored away in boxes. I ran across this old book of facts. It is just page after page of wierd facts. After about 2 pages, I thought, "this is perfect!") So, what can we all learn from this painting of facts? Well, how about this one: "On a per ounce basis, a woman's swimsuit is the highest price of wearing apparel in the United States" ...Or... "A whipping boy is a scapegoat, one punished for the comings of another" Or... "Spots and lines appearing on the fingernails indicate imperfections in the nails." Okay, that is like saying, "If there is a spot on your face then there is a spot on your face." A fact indeed but is it notable? These are great. Good fun!... Enjoy!

We Were Fast And Invincible And Careless
(Click Picture)

Our street was full of kids. Lower middle class kids in a lower middle class suburb of Midwestern Michigan. Most of us kids rode hand-me-down bikes and we wore hand-me-down clothes and we handed down jokes that we overheard from our older brothers. We were old enough to know what kissing was and young enough that we all still had to lie about actually doing it. We would all put old baseball cards in the spokes our bicycle wheels and ride up and down and up and down the street. We laughed and had races and someone would always wipe out and skin a knee and quickly get up so the other boys didn't think he was a wimp. Well, here is to the old days, when things were as simple as a baseball card in the spokes and when your days were filled with being friends and that was enough to get you through it all... Enjoy! Daily Keemo - Limited Edition Button #3 - 03.21

This is #3 in the limited edition button series. This is the limited edition of a recent painting called The Things We Abandon When It Doesn't Stop The Crying. (ACEO #334).

Story:
I sat in my seat on the plane drawing most of the way home. There was a mother with a small baby in the seat in front of me. The baby was not particularly excited about being stuck on the plane. (like most of us, I suppose) I turned my headphones up to drown out the crying and worked away on some pictures. I sat back and was thinking about what to draw next when I saw the baby's pink, stuffed bunny wedged between the two seats in front of me. The mother must have abandoned it as a method of getting the baby to stop crying. Well, you know the saying; one crying baby's loss is another painters gain. So, here is to all the things that we abandon when it doesn't stop the crying...

Only 25 of these buttons will be made available. Once these 25 button are gone, that is it. I have worked with the printer to make sure that each button is individually numbered to reflect it's placement in the set. (If you are the 5th person, you will receive button #5 of 25.) The first four designs in the series have already been created and they will be released over the coming weeks. (FYI, the first two sold out in 24-36 hours.) The next 4 are already in the works... Enjoy!
