the cracks across the ceiling.
Self doubt is change
dressed up in
the clothes of yesterday.

my flight that leaves soon and
wonder what really happens in the open air
up that high.
Self worth is self doubt
dressed up as
someone else.

There Is A Photo On The Wall And It Is Of Tomorrow

It's just the two of us in the house tonight and she is the shower and I can hear the water running from the floor above me and I am here at the keys and there is a wine glass and a lotto ticket and a lamp and addresses and numbers scribbled on a piece of paper and on the wall is taped a photo of my dead grandmother and I talking in the Michigan sun and she is leaning in very close to me because she couldn't hear very well in those final days before it was all over and the picture reminds me not wait for things to happen because they won't and you have to make them happen and there is a stack of paintings to my right and behind me there are paintings drying on the desk and just now I hear the shower turn off from the floor above and
everything in this moment
is now silent.

The email read, "I feel like this is a call in radio show. I have seen your paintings where people have emailed you ideas and you did it. So, I thought I would give it a shot. I am sure you receive a bunch of email and probably won't do this, which is OK. But I thought I would try anyway. I have short black hair but since my favorite color is green can you make it green? I also like pink. I don't know what else to say. Is that enough? Let me know if there is anything else that I am supposed to do. Thanks for your time..." It goes on to say a few more things but I'll leave those things out because they don't have anything to do with the painting. Well, L, I hope this is OK with you and I wish this was a call in radio show because that would be a ton of fun. Although, it would pose some problems when it came to viewing the artwork. It has been a while since I have painted a portrait of her. As I sit and look at this one, I should say that it probably isn't very flattering of her but then again none of these paintings are ever very flattering are they? I guess that isn't what these portraits are ever about. They never have. It's more about that she is upstairs doing her thing and I'm down here doing my thing and I can hear music up there and her feet walking around on the floor and papers rustling and I should really cut this story short so I can get up there and join in on whatever is going on because when it comes down to it is really is less about the painting and more about the person. The Future Is Being Written By Words From The Past

About once a week I get an email that has subject material suggestions for future paintings. All different kinds of things. Sometimes very specific things and other times very vague things. I add them all to this big list that I keep in a notebook near to my desk. It reads a bit like those Beat writings where they would write something then cut it up and then reassemble it. One of these days I'll publish the list for kicks or maybe that will be my very last work before I finally leave this place. Anyway, looking over the list for inspiration, I decided to chose four words and see what comes from it. So, I decided on the words, "pink", "flowers", "blue"and "hangover" and this is what came of it. (I don't know why but "blue" is one of my favorite words.) So, with that said, if there are any words that you want to add to the list be sure to shoot me an email and I'll add it. It will eventually make it's way into some works of art and who knows maybe 60 years from now it will be part of my last piece of art. (I already know what the last entry is going to be but you will have to wait). With that... Enjoy!
